2017 Annual Report
As the Trump Administration’s policies increasingly attack reproductive rights and women’s dignity at home and abroad, Marie Stopes International-United States (MSI-US) is honored to count so many fearless champions for women’s choice as our supporters.
2017 was undoubtedly a challenging year for the MSI partnership. The Global Gag Rule took hold, and many of our 37 country programs around the world struggled to keep family planning services going for the women and adolescent girls who need us most.
Fortunately, so many of you acted on your belief that women everywhere have the right to high-quality contraception and safe abortion by supporting MSI-US. Thanks to you, our country programs kept most of these lifesaving services running.
Your support for MSI-US in 2017 helped millions of women and girls in some of the hardest-to-reach places around the world have children by choice, not chance. Many gained access to contraception and safe abortion services for the first time. Lives were saved, and brighter futures were made possible.
In 2017, US donors reached women and girls in 27 of the 37 countries where MSI operates. You ensured that 26.9 million people around the world were using a MSI method of contraception last year, and that 5.4 million women and girls did not have to resort to an unsafe abortion.
You – long-standing and new donors, as well as reproductive choice advocates – have been instrumental to our resilience. We cannot thank you enough. In 2018, we continue to need your support. We lost US Government funding fast last year, and the gap continues to grow. With your help, we serve the women and girls who need us. With your help, we continually improve our contraceptive services and safe abortion care – delivering on our commitment to comprehensive family planning.
Thank you to everyone who makes our work possible. Together, we transform women’s lives and change the world.

Your support made a difference in 27 countries around the world. Learn about two of them:
US donors supported clients in Nepal like 19-year-old Nisha, who came to a Marie Stopes clinic to access safe abortion care. “When I came to the Marie Stopes Center, the environment here was nice, and the staff was friendly. Even when I told them I was not married they treated me well and provided detailed information. Right now, my focus is on my studies and to achieve better in life.”
US donors enabled Fatou, a Marie Stopes provider in Senegal, to reach even more women, girls and couples with family planning counseling and contraceptive services. Donor support for Senegal provides a critical contraceptive lifeline for women in the Sahel region of West Africa, which is full of potential but also faces stark health and development challenges.

With your support, we deliver quality care and choice based on every client’s individual needs.
Our team members care for each client as if she were family, such as Lalaina from Madagascar. “My experience today has been good. The nurse took the time to explain the family planning options that are available very well, and I appreciate it.”
When needed and where legal, we provide safe abortion and post-abortion care to clients like Pes in Cambodia. We know that access to high-quality abortion services saves women's lives, and gives them control over their own bodies and futures.
No matter how clients access our services, they receive the highest standards in medical care. Our providers are trained, monitored and supported to maintain high clinical quality for clients like Dijah in Nigeria.
With your help, we will be there for our clients.
We are deeply grateful for the solidarity and financial assistance our US supporters provided in 2017. Your confidence helped us fight on courageously as our US Government funding quickly disappeared due to the Global Gag Rule.
