In 2016, Marie Stopes International completed our new organizational strategy, Scaling-Up Excellence, which will guide us over the next five years. We celebrated our 40th anniversary of serving women with comprehensive reproductive choice, and reached millions of women with a MSI form of contraception. MSI-US and MSI Global unveiled new websites, focused on amplifying the voices of our clients and providers, and MSI-US finished the year with a collection of stories from the field titled In her own words.

2017 greets us with challenges, but MSI will continue our unwavering commitment to serving the women and communities who need us most, no matter what. We start this year with enthusiasm and determination, and a renewed focus on the following areas:

Youth: MSI continues to ensure that all youth and adolescents have comprehensive access to contraception. We strongly believe that we need an adolescent-centered approach to design and delivery of programming, and continue to look for ways to tailor our service-delivery methods to better fit the needs of our young clients. In 2017, we are excited continue youth programing in Zambia, Kenya and in the Sahel region of West Africa, and to begin new youth-focused projects in countries such as South Africa.

Safe Abortion: MSI fundamentally believes that safe abortion is a vital component of women’s reproductive healthcare, and will continue to provide access to safe, legal abortions. Every day, we empower each individual woman we serve to choose when she has children so she is free to pursue her dreams. This year, we will continue to reduce abortion stigma, advocate for more woman-centered policies, and support women in their right to have children by choice, not chance.

Empowering Women: Women and girls who have a choice of family planning methods are more likely to complete education, have a career, or be able to pursue their plans and goals for the future. In 2017, we will focus not only on empowering on women and girls of any age to reach their goals through reproductive health, but also on expanding our Marie Stopes Ladies service-delivery method. Marie Stopes Ladies is an innovative program that empowers nurse midwives as entrepreneurs to deliver high-quality family planning services in their communities.

Health Financing: This coming year, MSI will continue to advocate for contraceptive access and reproductive health care as essential health services—without risk of financial hardship—in each of the 37 countries where we provide services. Reproductive health and safe abortion are among the most valuable investments in development; family planning is a building block that benefits many aspects of a woman’s life and strengthens her community, including public health, a healthy environment, education and economic growth.
