Karine's story takes place in Madagascar.

She and her husband relied on his income as a stone salesman to support their family. “His business was quite successful, and for the last four years, since his death, I have been struggling a bit.”

After her husband’s death, Karine began selling snacks from a stall at the local school to support her children and grandchildren. Making ends meet was hard, and she knew getting pregnant again would only add to her family’s financial strain.

She decided to get a contraceptive implant to protect herself from unplanned pregnancy for up to four years.

“Thanks to contraception, I know I can take care of them with the money I earn and not worry about having to raise another child on my own.”

Two years later, when she decided the implant wasn’t working with her lifestyle, Karine visited a Marie Stopes Blue Star franchise clinic to have it removed. There, she received one-on-one family planning counseling from a trained provider and chose to switch to an injectable that provides three months of contraceptive protection at a time.

“I always feel very welcomed, listened to and cared-for when I come here."

When she decides, Karine gets the care she wants and deserves – without question or judgement.

Formed in early 2017 in response to President Trump’s reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule, the SheDecides movement envisions a world where every girl and woman can decide what to do with her body, with her life and with her future. Without question.

Marie Stopes International signed onto the movement right away because it aligns with our mission to help every woman have children by choice, not chance – no matter where she lives or what resources she has.

Today, we celebrate SheDecides Day, marking one year since the movement’s creation and the growing momentum to advance women’s health and rights globally.
