Annual Report

Dear friends,

We all know and love a bold woman — someone who makes a big difference for those around her through her courage and bold choices. In so doing, she may change the world for her family, her community and sometimes the whole world.

At MSI United States, we celebrate the thousands of bold MSI women around the world whose quiet work in their villages and towns makes reproductive choice possible for millions of people. Often against incredible odds, MSI’s service providers deliver contraception and safe abortion care that changes lives.

In 2019, our more than 10,000 team members overcame remarkable challenges to bring contraception and safe abortion to our clients. Many of these challenges originated right here in the United States. For the fourth year, the Trump/Pence Global Gag Rule continues to curtail funding for contraception and safe abortion and embolden anti-choice campaigners everywhere. Your support shored up our courage and resilience, enabling MSI to pursue its mission in 2019. We cannot thank you enough!

Last year, 32 million women around the world were using an MSI-provided method of contraception, the highest number ever. Many of our clients are now using contraception for the first time and their path to making bold choices for themselves and their families is clearer. We are especially proud that last year, we served more young people; 15% of our clients were under the age of 20. Now they are chasing their dreams.

This year, we are all fighting a global pandemic and mourning loved ones and neighbors we lost too soon, campaigning to make Black Lives Matter and still defending reproductive rights and choice that we thought were safe. We stand with everyone who believes in the dignity and equal rights of each person. We believe this is the foundation of peace, freedom and justice in the world and we will continue doing our part to make choice and reproductive rights a reality for each person.

Thank you for supporting our work!

Country Stories

Burkina Faso

US donors supported new ways of reaching adolescents in Burkina Faso. In partnership with IDEO.org, we launched a human-centered design initiative to reach more married, rural 15-19 year-olds. The result was a board game, La Famille Idéale, that guided honest conversations about sex—and over six months using the game, our teams in Burkina Faso saw more than 5,000 adolescents.

MSI in Ethiopia self-generates 40% of its income—and last year, we used that profit to fund six outreach teams to serve people in camps for the internally displaced. The teams reached thousands of women with contraception and safe abortion care, sustainably meeting an urgent humanitarian need.

US donors helped bust myths about sexual health in Nepal, where MSI supports a popular weekly radio show that answers young people’s questions about sex. Two million listeners tune in every Friday night, connecting adolescents to the information and services they need.

Our Commitment

Your support gives women and girls in 23 countries choice by helping MSI to end unsafe abortion and deliver contraception to women and girls who want it.

We won't stop until everyone has access to safe, quality abortion care. More than half of our clients have no other place to go for safe abortion—and the women we serve go on to spread the word about our services, preventing unsafe abortion. Clients like Dina (pictured left) from Ghana become advocates.

"I've never regretted it. A friend recommended the clinic to me and I have recommended the clinic to two friends."

Adolescents face some of the highest barriers to contraception, so we’re focused on finding new ways to reach them. Clients like Umah (pictured right) rely on us to help them take control of their lives and futures.

"Getting an education was my dream and taking contraception has allowed me to pursue that."

We work with governments and other national partners to remove barriers to safe abortion and contraception. Since 2016, we have helped to change 50 policies that restricted access to services that women and girls need.

Your help ensures that we will be there for the long term

Thank You

In 2017, we gave up US Government funding because we refused to sign Trump’s anti-choice Global Gag Rule. For the past four years, our supporters have stepped up to help ensure we can keep working for reproductive choice—your generosity is changing the lives of women and girls around the world.

“Every day, I see women taking control of their future because MSI opened a door for them. Because of your bold support, they have choice. Thank you for making choice possible and changing the lives of women and girls around the world.” – Inonge Wina-Chinyama
