MSI US is excited to announce a new partnership with the KBF CANADA Foundation. Canadian donors can support MSI’s work in the Sahel region of Africa. Donors can give online here by credit card, check or wire transfer.
Expanding choice in the Sahel
The Sahel region, which is home to about 70.8 million people, faces serious health challenges. Each woman has, on average, five children. In Mali and Niger, almost half of women have had their first child by the time they are 18. Only 20% of women use contraception.
This lack of access to contraception and safe abortion has dire consequences. Women in the Sahel die of pregnancy-related causes at some of the highest rates in the world. Despite the urgent need for contraception, limited health services, stigma and a lack of knowledge prevent women and girls from controlling their own bodies.
Safe abortion is particularly hard to access in the Sahel. Approximately 1.8 million unsafe abortions are carried out each year, causing some 9,700 deaths. In fact, the countries of West Africa have some of the highest rates of death from unsafe abortion in the world.
Our plan to reach women and girls
Women and girls in the Sahel need the tools to control their own bodies, lives and futures. That’s why MSI is committed to providing the full range of contraceptive methods, and we’re working to end unsafe abortion and provide safe abortion in as many locations as possible. We also provide care after unsafe abortions, so that no woman dies from dangerous complications.
To increase awareness about safe abortion, care after unsafe abortion and contraception, we’re building a referral network of local advocates. We’re also expanding the number of places where we provide services, so that more women and girls can access care without judgement.
